One Dead As Stolen Ambulance Collides With Bus

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 11 April 2015 | 23.17

The driver of a stolen ambulance has been killed after the vehicle crashed into a double-decker bus near York.

The person driving the ambulance - who police believe was not a paramedic or a member of ambulance staff - was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the bus and five of its 16 passengers were taken to hospital after the collision on the A64, near the Flaxton junction, about 8.30pm.

Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Another person, travelling in a Toyota Yaris with one other, was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The A64 has now reopened, North Yorkshire police said.

Traffic sergeant Ian Pope said that police had been looking for the stolen vehicle for 20 minutes when they were notified of the collision.

The search began at 8.10pm on Friday when the ambulance, which was privately owned and did not belong to Yorkshire Ambulance Service, was reported stolen.

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the crash or saw either of the vehicles beforehand to contact police and quote reference number 556 of 10 April.

Going, Going, Gone? Clarkson's Auctioneer Role

Former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson chipped in for charity as he took on the role of auctioneer at an event close to his Cotswolds home.

It was his first public appearance since he was sacked by the BBC after he attacked a producer on the hit motoring show.

Clarkson appeared cheerful, chatting to those outside the town hall after arriving in a sports car before heading inside to act as auctioneer raising money for Chipping Norton Lido.

As he walked in, he joked to photographers that he might consider a career change.

He said: "You've got to earn a living. Maybe I ought to take it up."

The event was an "auction of promises" fundraising for the pool, of which Clarkson has been a long-term supporter.

According to its website, the lots include Top Gear t-shirts signed by Clarkson, a bottle of House of Commons whisky signed by local MP David Cameron and a week's holiday in France.

His appearance came just a day after he pulled out of his planned appearance hosting BBC satirical show Have I Got News For You.

It would have been his first appearance since the incident that led to his sacking.

The star was suspended by the broadcaster on 10 March when he became the subject of an internal investigation after he attacked Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon, splitting his lip and verbally abusing him.

Clarkson received widespread public support but it was not enough to move his BBC bosses and his contract was not renewed, with director-general Tony Hall saying at the time "a line has been crossed" and "there cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another".

CCTV Shows Gang Plundering Hatton Garden Vault

CCTV footage reportedly showing the men behind the Hatton Garden jewel heist has emerged, after it was revealed the police initially failed to go to the scene despite being alerted by an alarm.

The 17-minute video purportedly shows at least six men arriving at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit company's building in London's jewellery quarter on Good Friday.

The Daily Mirror, which obtained the footage, reported that the group made two separate visits before leaving in a white van on Easter Sunday with the contents of 72 safety deposit boxes in wheelie bins and bags.

Scotland Yard is examining the footage, and has insisted it was already aware of the video before it was published by the newspaper.

The spokesman added the force has "not made any links" between the heist and an underground fire in the Holborn area which caused widespread power outages and road closures.

Police are also continuing to investigate why a call from a security firm about the alarm was graded in a way that meant officers did not consider it worthy of a response.

It was not until Tuesday morning that the raid - one of Britain's biggest - was discovered.

The Daily Mirror footage is from a camera that centres on a doorway, with an adjacent intercom, at the bottom of a set of stairs that leads to the street.

A number of men appear wearing high-visibility jackets, builder's hats, gloves and dust masks and carrying orange tool boxes and holdalls.

Others in the group are dressed in blue overalls and gloves.

Three men with their faces covered are seen taking wheelie bins in and out of the building.

A white van is seen pulling up shortly before 7am on Sunday, the newspaper reported, and once the bins and bags are loaded into it, the group get in and drive away.

Police have insisted it is too early to say if the handling of the call about the alert would have had an impact on the outcome.

But the revelations have led to anger from potential victims, who spoke of their shock that the police "just weren't there".

The police could face compensation claims running into the millions because officers failed to respond to the alarm, it has also been claimed.

Graeme Trudgill, executive director of the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said: "The police are responsible for negligent acts like other persons.

"The question will be whether they owe a duty of care to individual holders of safe deposit boxes or even to the safe deposit company."

But Michael Ward, managing director at insurance comparison site payingtoomuch.com, questioned whether such claims would be successful.

He said: "Customers who left their jewellery in the safe should be covered by the insurance policy of the safety deposit company.

"It is the company's responsibility and their insurance company to ensure their customers are compensated."

CCTV: Bikers Hunted After Man Killed At Takeaway

Police investigating the murder of a man at a takeaway have released CCTV video of two suspected killers fleeing the scene on a motorbike.

Tipu Sultan was blasted with a shotgun at close range in a pre-planned attack just before 10pm on Tuesday.

The killing happened at the back of the Herbs n Spice Kitchen takeaway in Lake Avenue, South Shields, Tyneside.

Mr Sultan, 32, died from a single gunshot wound.

Detectives believe the helmet-wearing pair in the video were the killers who were seen riding off moments after the attack.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw them and the bike before or after the killing.

They said the CCTV footage shows two men on a motorbike heading down Lizard Lane and towards Whitburn and Sunderland.

South Tyneside Superintendent Sav Patsalos said: "It was taken in the minutes after Tipu Sultan was shot and we believe that this is the two men who are responsible for his murder leaving the scene.

"From the footage you can clearly see the two men on the bike, both are wearing helmets.

"From the footage we can gauge the size and shape of the motorcycle - which we believe is a large, red, superbike or performance style bike.

"We need to speak to anyone who saw these men and this bike before or after the incident.

Grand National Expects Record Betting Bonanza

More than nine million people are expected to watch the Grand National today, as bookies predict the biggest betting turnover of all time.

The National is taking place at Aintree with 39 horses lining up to tackle the famous course, over 30 fences and nearly four-and-a-half miles.

Favourite to triumph is Shutthefrontdoor, ridden by jockey AP McCoy, who says he will retire if he passes the winning post first.

The horse has been a consistent 7-1 all week, but the odds are likely to shorten when the public support arrives.

Bookmakers Betfred predict the biggest betting turnover on a single race in British history.

"Normally there is about £150m waged - but we are expecting that figure to be some way north of that today," a spokesman told Sky News.

:: Click here for Sky News Sports Editor Nick Powell's top 10 runners and riders to watch

The winning horse will collect £561,300. Second place brings in £211,100, while the horse finishing third collects £105,500.

This afternoon's rank outsider is River Choice, attracting odds as high as 250-1.

A win for Shutthefrontdoor, trained by Jonjo O'Neill, could cost bookmakers up to £50m, with millions of punters expected to place their faith in the horse.

Some expect the mount to become the shortest-priced National favourite since Red Rum 40 years ago.

British Boy, 7, Killed In Alps Ski Tragedy

A seven-year-old British boy has died in a skiing accident in the French Alps.

The child, who had been on a family holiday in the resort of Flaine in the Haute Savoie region, went over a cliff after straying off piste, emergency services told news agency AFP.

Some reports suggested the boy got lost after attempting the final descent of the day on his own.

Others said he got separated from the group after taking a wrong turn, while skiing with the rest of the group.

An emergency services spokesman said: "He hit a rocky outcrop, then fell 50 to 100 metres (160ft to 320ft)."

His desperate mother raised the alarm at 7pm on Friday, said reports.

The child's body was found by a rescue helicopter, about two hours after the fall, according to reports in French media.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Flaine, France, on April 10.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."

An investigation by French authorities is under way.

Miliband Hits Out At Cameron Over NHS Pledge

Ed Miliband has hit out at David Cameron's pledge to pump an extra £8bn a year into the NHS by 2020, warning the PM: "You can't fund the NHS on an IOU."

The Labour leader was speaking after the Prime Minister pledged to protect the NHS by meeting its funding needs "in full".

Mr Cameron has promised to fund the five-year reform plan put forward by NHS chief executive Simon Stevens by providing at least an extra £8bn a year for the health service by 2020.

:: Full Coverage Of General Election 2015

This will mean that over-75s will be guaranteed same-day access to GPs, patients will be able to see doctors out of regular office hours and the NHS will provide a full range of services seven days a week, according to Mr Cameron.

But Mr Miliband said: "We've seen five years of failure and broken promises from David Cameron on the NHS."

He added: "The truth is - you can't save the NHS if you don't know where the money is coming from.

"You can only damage the NHS when you are planning colossal cuts in public spending year after year after year, which is what this Tory government is planning.

"The choice is clear: a funded Labour plan for more doctors, nurses and midwives - or unfunded promises from a Tory party that has a record of breaking its word."

Labour has published a mini-manifesto on the NHS, which includes a new right to a dedicated midwife before and after childbirth.

Mr Miliband said this would be made possible by recruiting 3,000 extra midwives.

The party has already committed to providing an extra £2.5bn of health spending on top of the budgets provided by the Government to pay for more doctors, nurses and other health workers.

This would be paid for through taxes on expensive properties and tobacco companies and a crackdown on tax avoidance, the party claims.

In an effort to keep the pressure on Mr Cameron and the Tories about how they would fund the pledge, Labour tweeted a video of an exchange at Prime Minister's Questions earlier this year in which Mr Cameron said the "real risk" to the NHS was "unfunded spending commitments".

When pressed by Sky's Anushka Asthana on how the Conservatives would fund the plan Mr Cameron did not go into specifics, but he said the pledge was possible "because we have a strong economy and because we have taken the long-term decisions necessary to put the NHS first".

He said: "I want an NHS that continues to expand and improve and provide great care, that continues to save lives.

"It's always been there for me and my family and I want it there for everyone's families."

Mr Miliband was pressed to say if he would commit his party to matching the £8bn pledge, but he declined.

Conservative Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said Labour would put the future of the health service "at risk" because it would not match Tory funding commitments or their long-term economic plan.

Sky's Health Correspondent Thomas Moore said the Conservative commitment to fund the NHS is no more or less unfunded than Labour's.

He said: "The Tories are banking on growing tax receipts by the Treasury as wages rise with the recovery. No guarantees there.

"Labour is banking on a mansion tax (verified £1.2bn), a tobacco tax (no details yet) and a crackdown on tax avoidance (always difficult to guarantee because the rich employ clever accountants."

Funding of the health service has emerged as one of the key issues of the campaign.

Mr Stevens predicted in a report in October that, if health spending rose only at the rate of inflation, growing demand for care would leave the NHS in England with a £30bn funding gap by 2020.

He said around £22bn of that could be met through "efficiencies", but the remainder would have to come from government funds.

Until now, only the Liberal Democrats had committed to finding the extra money.

Lightning Strike Jet Was Just Seconds From Crash

A passenger plane pulled out of a terrifying nosedive with just seven seconds to spare after being hit by lightning in Scotland, says an air accident report.

The Loganair flight, carrying 30 passengers and three crew members, was moments away from crashing into the North Sea before the pilot wrested back control.

The island-hopping Saab 2000 was flying from Aberdeen to Sumburgh Airport, Shetland, when it hit a snow storm with 70mph winds, an interim report by the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) said.

The 42-year-old pilot decided to abort his approach when he was seven miles away, and the plane was then struck by lightning which travelled from the nose to the tail of the aircraft.

He and the co-pilot wrongly believed the autopilot system had disengaged and struggled to regain control of the plane as it plunged at high speed.

As the co-pilot declared a mayday, the pilot kept trying to gain height - but every move was countered by the autopilot.

When it fell to 4,000ft, the plane suddenly pitched nose down and started falling at 158ft per second.

At 1,100ft - giving the crew just seven seconds to act before the plane crashed into the waves - 'pull-up' alarms sounded, the captain applied full power and the aircraft finally started to climb.

The plane landed safely in Aberdeen, with only minor damage.

No passengers were injured, but many were left shaken by the incident, which took place on the night of 14 December.

Passenger Shona Manson told the Daily Telegraph: "It was really, really bumpy. If it was someone who's a bad flyer, it'd be their worst nightmare.

"We were on descent and I said to my partner, we're going back up again, and just as we started to go up again there was an almighty bang and a flash that went over the left wing.

"Then we were really ascending, and at that point there were a few folk looking around going 'Oh my God, what's happening?' The poor guy across the aisle from me just had eyes like rabbits in headlights."

The report said the crew may have thought the lighting strike had disabled the autopilot because other controls had stopped working.

But it was still functioning and trying to descend to its instructed level for the landing.

The AAIB report said: "Although the pilots' actions suggested that they were under the impression the autopilot had disengaged at the moment of the lightning strike, recorded data showed that it had remained engaged."

It said it had not identified any technical malfunction which might account for the incident, and the investigation is continuing, looking at crew training, autopilot design, and any "human factors".

Murray And Sears Tying Knot In Star's Home Town

Andy Murray and his long-time girlfriend Kim Sears are getting married in the tennis star's Scottish home town.

The couple, both 27, are to exchange vows at Dunblane Cathedral before a reception at Cromlix House, the hotel owned by the top sportsman.

Murray donned his kilt, but the style and design of Sears' bridal gown has remained a secret.

The tennis star arrived along with his brother Jamie, one of three best men along with friends Ross Hutchins and Carlos Mier.

Guests included Murray's parents Judy and William, grandparents Shirley and Roy Erskine, and former British tennis number one Tim Henman,

Crowds of fans gathered outside the cathedral, along with hundreds of people from the media, hoping to secure a prime view of the action.

The ceremony is being conducted by Reverend Colin Renwick, and there had been showers and giant hailstones earlier in the day.

Weather conditions seemed fairly windy when the bride arrived although it appeared dry.

The British number one had tweeted a picture of an umbrella in what appears to be a preview of the day in emojis on his Twitter account.

The tweet also features a picture of a church, a ring, a kiss, cake and drinks including beer, cocktails and wine.

It ends with hearts, a face throwing a kiss and several Zzzz icons for sleep.

Murray's mother Judy discussed the bad weather on social media, initially tweeting: "Hailstones. Marvellous."

Aspell Wins Back-To-Back Grand Nationals

Leighton Aspell has won successive Grand Nationals after riding 25-1 shot Many Clouds to victory at Aintree.

He is the first jockey to win back-to-back Nationals since Brian Fletcher on Red Rum in 1973 and 1974 - and the first to do so on different horses since the 1950s.

It meant there was no fairytale ending for the retiring AP McCoy, who the bookies will have been relieved to see finish fifth.

Saint Are was a close second, Monbeg Dude third and Alvarado fourth.

More than nine million people were expected to watch the biggest race in the calendar, while some £150m of bets were anticipated.

Aspell, who won last year on Pineau de Re, said of his Oliver Sherwood-trained horse: "He's the best ride I've had over these fences, he was awesome.

"It was wonderful and we will certainly celebrate tonight. I asked some big questions, but he dug deep.

"He is all heart - all season he has had hard races.

"Win lose or draw, that's the best ride I have had in the National. I just hoped his battery life lasted out and it did."

Many Clouds was said to have had a "wobble" after the race but recovered quickly.

Owner Trevor Hemmings, for whom this was a third win, said: "I'm almost speechless but what a wonderful feeling."

All 39 horses were thought to be okay afterwards despite several heavy falls.

A total of 19 completed the four-and-a-half mile race.

The team behind Many Clouds collected £561,300 for victory, with second getting £211,100 and third £105,500.

Family Had Concerns Over 'Syria-Bound' Brit

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 04 April 2015 | 23.17

There were reportedly concerns about the behaviour of a British man in the months before he was arrested for allegedly trying to cross illegally into Syria.

Waheed Ahmed, 21, was among nine members of the same family who were detained in Turkey on Wednesday and are set to be deported.

British police have been searching the home of his father Shakil Ahmed, who is a Labour councillor in Rochdale.

They have also searched four other properties - two in Heywood and two in Rochdale. Two of the searches are ongoing.

Mohammed Shafiq, who is a friend of Shakil Ahmed, said of Waheed: "There were concerns in the last six months to a year about a change in his behaviour.

"And a change in his attitude towards various different issues."

He also told Sky News: "That was causing concern for people in the community and his family."

Waheed Ahmed was with his aunt, two cousins and the wife of one of his cousins when they were stopped by authorities in southern Turkey, near the Syrian border. They had also taken four children with them.

The 21-year-old is due to be sent back to the UK along with Zareeda Bi, 47, Maboob Yasin, 22, Habib Yasin, 24, and Samia Bi, 22, and the youngsters aged one, three, eight and 11.

They are understood to have been kept in a police station in Turkey on Thursday night.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "It remains the case that we are not aware of any time scale for the potential return of the nine individuals."

Most of the group flew from Manchester on 27 March and Waheed Ahmed joined them three days later on a flight from Birmingham.

Shakil Ahmed, who represents the Kingsway ward on Rochdale Borough Council, said the group were on holiday but he had thought his son was on a work placement in Birmingham.

"My son is a good Muslim and his loyalties belong to Britain, so I don't understand what he's doing there.

"If I thought for a second that he was in danger of being radicalised, I would have reported him to the authorities.

"I just want to speak to my son and get him home as soon as possible so I can find out what's going on."

Usman Nawaz, who went to the same school as Waheed Ahmed in Rochdale, said mosques and his school in Rochdale were not to blame for Waheed's actions.

The 25-year-old, a former member of the Young Muslims' Advisory Group and mentor to young Muslims through Rochdale's Youth Council, said: "For some it's an adventure but for some they think that they are doing something noble.

"The ideology which is peddled, this very hardcore understanding of the faith, one which is state sponsored by Saudi Arabia, that has to be challenged and it's quite difficult to challenge it in a coherent manner when the Saudi ideology has the backing of petrodollars."

A friend of Waheed Ahmed believes he could have travelled for humanitarian reasons.

Bassat Yussu said: "We used to talk about Palestine and Syria and what was going on around there and sometimes he used to collect charity money."

Neighbour Mohammed Sharif said he "never had suspicion about the family" and remembered Waheed as a "nice quiet young lad" who would "speak to you with respect".

Officers are trying to establish their reason for travelling to the Syrian border.

Assistant Chief Constable Ian Wiggett said: "What is obviously concerning is why a family were seemingly attempting to take very young and vulnerable children into a war zone.

"Such a volatile and dangerous environment is no place for them whatsoever."

The Metropolitan Police believe around 600 Britons have travelled to Syria and Iraq since the conflict began, while around half are thought to have returned to the UK.

Doctor Suspended After Four Patient Deaths

By Tom Parmenter, Sky News Correspondent

A doctor has been suspended from practising after an investigation was launched into the deaths of four patients.

The inquiry is focused on the Eagle Medical Practice on Alderney in the Channel Islands and is being led by Guernsey Police.

On Thursday they confirmed 10 officers used a search warrant to raid a surgery run by Dr Rory Lyons and a private residential address.

A police spokesman said nobody has been arrested.

"The circumstances which led to this action are that concerns were raised with the Health and Social Services Department (HSSD) following the death of a patient who had been under the care of the Eagle Medical Practice," he said.

"HSSD carried out a preliminary internal investigation, where three further deaths of concern were identified, before referring the matter to Guernsey police. Based on this information we have launched an investigation."

The spokesman added: "This decisive early action was necessary in order to ensure the protection of the public, which is always our primary concern."

The HSSD said the General Medical Council (GMC) was aware of the developments.

HSSD chief officer Carol Tozer said: "Following our initial investigation, a doctor was excluded from treating patients at the Mignot Memorial Hospital and the General Medical Council was informed.

"The GMC was also notified that the matter is now the subject of a police investigation.

"The GMC has confirmed that the doctor's practice is already restricted and he is being investigated."

The Eagle Medical Practice on Ollivier Street in St Anne's serves around 500 patients on Guernsey, which has a total population of approximately 1,900.

A patient who did not wish to be named told Sky News: "I'm surprised and shocked by all this, I have been treated by Dr Lyons for years as have my relatives.

"He is by far and away one of the most skilled GPs I have experience of."

Summer-Born Kids Face School Postcode Lottery

By Adele Robinson, Sky News Correspondent

Parents and campaigners claim a "postcode lottery" is deciding whether summer-born children are allowed to defer school for a year.

Department for Education guidance allows delays to a child's schooling until the September after their fifth birthday.

Some parents apply for school start deferral because they feel their son or daughter is not ready, emotionally or physically.

The government advice is designed to help children with birthdays between 1 April and 31 August.

However, campaigners say some admissions authorities are not letting children defer.

They also say some are pushing deferred children straight into Year 1, skipping reception class altogether.

Hayley Beards has been unsuccessful in an appeal for her son Zach to delay school by one year.

His fourth birthday is two weeks before term begins and he has speech difficulties.

"He will be expected to do things that a five-year-old can do, like go to the toilet by himself and get dressed by himself after PE," she said.

"I know he just won't be able to do that at just turned four ... in the long run he's at a disadvantage academically and socially."

An education psychologist assessed Zach and concluded it "wouldn't be of great benefit" to him if he deferred.

Living just a few miles away Rosie Dutton has been successful in her appeal for her daughter, Olivia, to defer school for a year, when she turns five.

But because some authorities are sending deferred children straight into Year 1, effectively skipping a year, she is worried the same might happen to her daughter.

"At any point during the school year the school can decide to take her out of that year group," she said.

"If a new head comes into the school they might change their mind, or if we move house, another county might not allow it.

"The DfE have legislated a subjective code which allows decisions to be made at local level resulting in a postcode lottery."

Guidance from the Department for Education was revised in December 2014.

It states that decisions are made at a local level based on the individual circumstances of each child.

It advises that parents' views, information about the child's development and, where relevant, their medical history must be considered.

Both parents told Sky News they want a "new and totally clear admissions code" that is enforced at a national level.

Proton Beam Therapy Centres To Open In UK

The UK will get its first three proton beam therapy centres from next year in what experts say is a significant breakthrough for cancer treatment.

The first centre will be opened in Cardiff by local company Proton Partners International Ltd, with two others to follow in London and Northumberland by 2017.

The centres will be available for NHS patients from England, Scotland and Wales, as well as self-paying patients and those with private medical insurance.

Currently patients must head overseas for this type of treatment.

Life sciences entrepreneur Professor Sir Chris Evans says there are more than 150,000 people treated for cancer each year and that demand for treatment is growing.

Health insurer Bupa has estimated that by 2021 the UK's ageing population is likely to see a 20% rise in the number of new cancers and a 62% rise in the cost of treatment - to £15.3bn.

Proton beam therapy is a targeted type of radiotherapy that can treat hard-to-reach cancers, such as spinal tumours, with a lower risk of damaging the surrounding tissue or causing side effects.

The announcement comes just weeks after the parents of brain cancer survivor Ashya King told how the five-year-old made a "miracle" recovery after receiving proton beam therapy in Prague in the Czech Republic.

The treatment was not available for him on the NHS, although the health service later agreed to fund it.

Professor Gordon McVie, senior consultant at the European Institute of Oncology, who has been appointed chairman of Proton Partners International, says the development is "exciting and important".

He added: "As things stand, patients who can benefit from this treatment have to go abroad for treatment, often at great expense to the NHS.

"The creation of these centres will go a long way to ensuring the very best of treatment is available in the UK."

Teenager Trapped In '100-Year-Old Body' Dies

A young campaigner who fought to raise awareness of progeria, which causes sufferers to age eight times faster, has died at the age of 17.

Hayley Okines, from Bexhill in East Sussex, became known as the "100-year-old teenager" and won thousands of hearts as she and her family raised funds for her medical treatment and to raise awareness of her condition.

She also published an autobiography Old Before My Time at the age of 14.

Her mother Kerry announced the death on Thursday on her Facebook page, writing: "My baby has gone somewhere better.

"She took her last breath in my arms at 9.39pm."

Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome causes accelerated ageing and people with the condition also suffer heart problems, lack of growth and loss of body fat and hair.

The Progeria Foundation also posted a tribute on its Facebook page: "The entire Progeria family mourns together with many as we say goodbye to Hayley Okines, our smart, beautiful and spirited English rose, who passed away today at age 17.

"Gone from our sight but never our memories, gone from our touch but never our hearts. We will miss you."

Hundreds of others have taken to Hayley's Facebook page to leave their tributes.

Ex-All Black Held Over Alleged Sex Assault

Former New Zealand rugby union captain Mils Muliaina has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

The 34-year-old Connacht full back, who earned 100 caps for the All Blacks, is suspected of involvement in an incident in Cardiff last month.

He was forced out of Friday night's European Challenge Cup quarter-final tie against Gloucester after 34 minutes, because of injury.

However, shortly after the final whistle, television pictures showed Muliaina being taken away by police.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said: "A man in his 30s was arrested at Kingsholm Stadium on Friday 3 April on suspicion of sexual assault in relation to an incident in Cardiff in March.

"The man has been handed over to officers from South Wales Police who are investigating the incident."

Investigation Ordered Into Leaked Sturgeon Memo

An investigation will be carried out into how a controversial memo about a meeting between Nicola Sturgeon and the French ambassador was leaked.

A Daily Telegraph report claims a leaked UK government memorandum - likely from the Foreign Office - sets out an account of a meeting between the SNP leader and the French ambassador to the UK Sylvie Bermann.

It claims she told the ambassador she would rather see David Cameron than Ed Miliband as PM after the election, a claim she strongly denies.

Cabinet Secretary Jeremy Heywood has ordered a leak inquiry to see how the memo reached the newspaper.

Ms Sturgeon had earlier said: "The bigger question and one I am raising with the head of the civil service is who wrote this memo since the Foreign Office seem to be denying all knowledge of it.

:: For full coverage of General Election 2015 click here

"How did it come to contain such an inaccuracy and how did it get into the hands of the Tory-supporting Daily Telegraph?"

The memo was written by a British civil servant after a conversation with France's consul general in Edinburgh, Pierre-Alain Coffinier, who was present.

But speaking to Sky News on Saturday, Mr Coffinier said that no preference for Prime Minister was discussed at the meeting in February.

:: Six Questions About The Nicola Sturgeon Memo

"At no stage did anyone comment on their preference regarding the elections."

The memo reportedly said: "Discussion appears to have focused mainly on the political situation, with the (First Minister) stating that she wouldn't want a formal coalition with Labour; that the SNP would almost certainly have a large number of seats ... that she'd rather see David Cameron remain as PM."

It added that Ms Sturgeon said the Labour leader was not "prime minister material".

The final line of the memo, however, read: "I have to admit that I'm not sure that the FM's tongue would be quite so loose on that kind of thing in a meeting like that, so it might well be a case of something being lost in translation."

Mr Miliband said: "I think these are damning revelations.

"What it shows is that while in public the SNP are saying they don't want to see a Conservative government in private they're actually saying they do want a Conservative government.

"It shows that the answer at this General Election is that if you want the Conservatives out the only answer is to vote Labour for a Labour government."

Sky's political correspondent Anushka Asthana said: "The fact that Nicola Sturgeon has 'categorically' denied that she expressed a prime ministerial preference during a private conversation with the French ambassador will do little to stem the political fallout from this story.

"After all, the very suggestion of a conversation could be political gold-dust for Labour, whose national electoral hopes hinge on how well the SNP perform in Scotland."

Meanwhile, campaigning continues into Easter with Labour unveiling a plan to build 125,000 homes by creating a £5bn housebuilding fund.

The Tories, meanwhile, are unveiling a pledge to force pornography websites to use effective age-verification tools to keep out under-18s.

Ms Sturgeon is due to join the annual Scrap Trident group march in Glasgow, only a short distance from the Faslane home of nuclear-armed submarines.

The latest Survation/Mirror poll puts Mr Miliband ahead of Mr Cameron, with 33% and 31% of the vote respectively.

UKIP polled at 18%, the Liberal Democrats 9%, the SNP 5% and Greens 3%.

These results are markedly different from a YouGov/The Sun poll which was published on Thursday night.

It suggested that the Conservative Party had hit a three-year high - with 37% of those questioned stating they would vote Tory if the General Election was tomorrow.

Labour was on 35%, the Lib Dems on 7%, UKIP on 12% and the Greens on 5%.

Labour Adapts Tory Policy On Housing Fund

By Jason Farrell, Senior Political Correspondent

The Labour Party has taken the unusual step of adapting a recent Tory announcement to create a £5bn housebuilding fund.

In George Osborne's budget last month he unveiled a first-time buyers ISA savings account.

The ISA sees investors' savings boosted with up to £3,000 of government money to help them buy a home.

The Labour Party says it would ensure that savers' money in these accounts was used by the banks to invest in housebuilding.

A spokesman said: "We are quite literally building on their policy."

Labour said this was "a major new manifesto commitment" and the £5bn "Future Homes Fund" would build 125,000 homes over the course of the next parliament.

It will be a key part of Labour's plan to raise construction levels of homes to 200,000 a year by 2020.

The estimated fund does not cover the entire cost of Labour's plan.

In a speech in Warrington, Ed Miliband described the idea as "a foundation stone for building a country where working people can succeed".

He said: "The banks will benefit from the taxpayer support we will provide to help people save for their first home.

"In return, we will expect the banks to invest in homes for the next generation. Unlocking £5bn for 125,000 homes.

"A Labour government will get Britain building again."

The Conservatives have announced plans for 200,000 homes to be made available to first-time buyers in England by 2020, if they win the election.

They plan to build 200,000 homes a year.

The Liberal Democrats promise 300,000 homes a year while the Greens say 500,000 social houses should be built annually.

The social housing would be paid for by scrapping buy-to-let mortgage interest tax allowance.

UKIP says new homes should be exempt from stamp duty.

Married Gay Killers Not Allowed To Share Cell

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 28 Maret 2015 | 23.17

Two murderers who married in Britain's first gay prison marriage have been banned from sharing a cell.

Paedophile Mikhail Gallatinov, 40, and Marc Goodwin, 31, who is serving life for a homophobic murder, wed at the maximum security Full Sutton prison, near York.

A Prison Service spokesman said the taxpayer did not pay for the 15-minute service at Full Sutton, where both men are serving their time.

"We are very clear that if prisoners do get married, the taxpayer does not foot the bill for the ceremony and they are certainly not allowed to share a cell," he said.

Four of their relatives attended the 15-minute ceremony, which the inmates wore suits for.

Gallatinov's father told Manchester Evening News that even though his son has violent past, he still deserves happiness.

Allen Abdulla, from Hull, said: "If you find love you have to go for it - even if it is in prison.

"Everyone deserves to be happy."

Gallatinov was sentenced to life with a minimum of 20 years after being convicted of murdering Adrian Kaminsky, 28, in Manchester in 1997.

The court heard Gallatinov, a convicted paedophile, was under surveillance by undercover police when he strangled Mr Kaminsky.

Judge Rhys Davies QC said at the time: "This was a cold-blooded, well-planned, callous, chilling and apparently motiveless killing."

Gallatinov's new husband, Goodwin, was handed a life sentence in 2007 for the gay-hate killing of Malcolm Benfold, 57, on the Blackpool seafront.

Goodwin, of Airdrie, Lanarkshire, was 23 at the time and was told he must serve a minimum of 18 years before being considered for parole.

After Goodwin was convicted, police described the killing as "a savage, senseless homophobic attack that resulted in the death of a harmless man".

Kidnapper Hunted After Young Girl Snatched

A man who allegedly abducted a six-year-old girl in Burnley is being hunted by police.

The six-year-old was taken by the man, who was possibly in a large dark-coloured car, from Nairne Street at around 4pm on Thursday.

She was later dropped off around four miles away in Whitefield Street, Hapton, where she was found and taken home before police were alerted.

Sky News understands she was missing for around 20 minutes.

The suspect police want to trace is described as being white, in his 40s, with a tanned complexion and bald.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area to reassure the local community.

Specialist officers are supporting the young victim and her family.

Detective Chief Inspector Joanne McHugh said: "This investigation is very much in its early stages and we are determined to find out exactly what has happened to this young child and to catch the man who has done this.

"We have a team of detectives who are on with various lines of inquiry and will be speaking to people in the area, as well as looking for possible CCTV footage and forensic evidence. We will also be speaking to the victim.

"I would like to reassure the public that whilst incidents of this kind are rare, we have stepped up police patrols in the area.

"We have specially trained officers offering support to this young girl and her family at this time.

"I urge anyone who may have seen this vehicle, anything suspicious in the time leading up to the incident or indeed anyone with information about this incident to contact the police urgently."

Sky's Nick Martin said police had begun the process of talking to the young girl.

He said: "It's really important that police quickly establish exactly what happened.

"Critical will be a clear description of the man, the vehicle he was driving, where they drove, his accent and clothing and of course what happened during the 20 minutes she was missing.

"Officers will already be looking at CCTV from the area to see if cameras captured the abduction and from that they could identify the vehicle and registration plate.

"Police will also be trying to reassure the community and it's likely that extra officers will be put into the area to answer any questions that anxious parents may have."

Anyone with information can call Lancashire Police on 101 quoting incident reference 0916 of Thursday, 26 March, or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

School Now Linked To 8 Girls Over IS In Syria

Four schoolgirls banned last week from leaving the UK over fears they would travel to Syria are from the same London school as four other girls who have already fled to join Islamic State, it has been revealed.

A judge has decided that it can now be made public that all eight teenagers were pupils at Bethnal Green Academy in east London.

In February, Kadiza Sultana, 16, Shamima Begum, 15, and Amira Abase, 15, left their east London homes for Syria, two months after a fellow pupil is thought to have left to join IS there.

But police had also raised concerns about four other girls at the school.

Last week, Mr Justice Hayden made the girls - aged 15 and 16 - wards of the court, preventing them from leaving the country without a judge's permission.

He made the move after social services at Tower Hamlets Council made an application to the Family Division of the High Court in London.

Social workers told the judge the girls might flee to areas controlled by the Islamic State and counter terrorism specialists at the Metropolitan Police also gave evidence during the week-long hearing.

The judge changed his order banning identification of the girls after the press appealed that identifying the school would be in the public interest.

The Press Association news agency argued that parents in the area considering schools for their children had a right to know.

:: Earlier this month Mr Justice Hayden, who said that sometimes the law had to intervene to protect young people from themselves, barred a 16-year-old boy from travelling abroad by making him a ward of the court.

The boy's two elder brothers had already been killed fighting for militants in Syria.

He also banned identification of this youngster but revealed that the local authority which had applied to have him made a ward of the court was Brighton and Hove City Council.

Labour Uses Miliband's 'Hell Yes' To Woo Donors

Labour is giving away 'Hell Yes' T-shirts to party donors after Ed Miliband used the phrase when questioned about whether he was "tough enough" for Downing Street.

The Labour leader and Prime Minister David Cameron faced tough questioning earlier this week during the 90-minute Sky News Channel 4 Battle for Number 10 programme.

During the election set-piece event, Jeremy Paxman grilled Mr Miliband, suggesting he was a "north London geek" who could not handle the likes of Vladimir Putin.

"Am I tough enough? Hell yes, I'm tough enough," Mr Miliband said.

A Labour spokesperson said: "These limited-edition Ed Miliband-inspired election T-shirts are available to anybody who donates £15 or more online this weekend.

"Labour raised over £1m in small donations online in the last year, and our Vote Labour tea-towels were hugely popular.

"While the Tories rely on a small group of super-rich donors, Labour's election campaign is built on the contributions of thousands of members in every corner of the country."

Chancellor George Osborne poked fun at Mr Miliband's use of words when he addressed the Tory spring conference in Manchester.

"I was listening to Ed Miliband, with all that legendary statesmanship of his, saying 'hell, yeah, I'll be a leader'," he said.

"I'll tell you where that leads: a return to rising unemployment; a return to rising debts; a return to economic chaos.

"Hell? Yes indeed."

Mr Cameron refused to debate Mr Miliband head-to-head, but agreed to the 90-minute session which was split into 18-minute interviews for each man with Paxman and an 18-minute questions session with a studio audience.

Despite Mr Miliband's attempts to show his tougher side, an ICM/Guardian poll gave victory to Mr Cameron with 54% of the 2,000 people asking saying he had performed best, but it was close and 46% gave the win to Mr Miliband.

Crash Victim's Father: Pilot Motive Irrelevant

The father of a British man who died on flight 4U9525 says the co-pilot's motive for crashing the plane is "not relevant".

Philip Bramley, whose 28-year-old son Paul was among 150 victims of the tragedy in the French Alps, said his focus was on seeing that "this never happens again".

French investigators have said the mental health of co-pilot Andreas Lubitz was a "serious lead" in the inquiry, but not the only one.

Is MIL-77 The New Ebola-Fighting Wonder Drug?

Corporal Anna Cross is the first person to be treated with the experimental drug MIL-77, raising hopes that the medicine may be a possible cure for the dealy Ebola virus.

Previously the drug Z-Mapp was being hailed as the best hope for fighting the disease, which has killed more than 10,000 people and infected around 25,000 since the latest outbreak last year.

Z-Mapp was used to treat the first Briton infected with the disease, nurse Will Pooley, as well as two US healthcare workers - Dr Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol.

Pauline Cafferkey, a Scottish nurse infected, was treated with plasma donated by Ebola survivors, after stocks of Z-Mapp ran out in January.

All four made a full recovery.

Cpl Cross, 25, was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital on 12 March and two weeks on has appeared at a news conference with doctors announcing she is now Ebola-free.

Dr Mike Jacobs, of the Royal Free Hospital, where Cpl Cross was treated, said the drug used to treat her - MIL-77 - was a close relative of Z-Mapp, which scientists claimed had healed 18 monkeys given a dose of Ebola.

The drug is made in China and is also a combination of antibodies given intravenously.

Dr Jacobs said it was impossible to say on the basis of treating one patient whether MIL-77 would work as well with others.

"Having recovered doesn't tell us it works because, in one patient, we just can't draw that conclusion. It will have to be used more widely...before we can say with certainty that the drug is helpful.

He said: "What I can tell you is that the treatment went very well.

"It caused no side effects that we were able to illicit and we were very happy with its use."

Meanwhile, the fight against Ebola in west Africa appears to be succeeding, with 79 new cases confirmed in the week to 22 March - the lowest weekly total this year so far, according to the World Health Organisation.

Guinea accounted for 45 of these cases and Sierra Leone had 33. Liberia, having had no new cases reported for the previous three weeks, had one new confirmed case.

A British military health worker has been declared free of Ebola after being the first patient in the world treated with an experimental drug.

Corporal Anna Cross, 25, was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital on 12 March after contracting the disease.

She said she decided to allow doctors to use MIL 77, which they acquired from China, after "careful consideration".

Speaking at a news conference in London, she recalled her response when asked whether she was prepared to try the experimental drug.

"I said: 'I have Ebola, so I'd rather that than high-dose vitamin C. I'll have what drugs you think are good for me,'" she told reporters.

Cameron Vows 'Truly Seven-Day-A-Week' NHS

David Cameron has launched his party's election campaign in Manchester with a pledge to deliver a "truly seven-day NHS" for England if he is returned to power on 7 May.

The Prime Minister used Conservative spring conference to set out plans for patients to be able to access hospital services at weekends as well as during the week.

It came the day after Labour leader Ed Miliband promised a "double lock" to safeguard the future of the NHS - £2.5bn of new investment and limits on further privatisation.

Mr Cameron said that under Tory plans, hospitals across England will offer consultant-level services seven days a week by the end of the next parliament in 2020.

The changes will start with emergency and urgent care together with supporting services, such as diagnostics.

It follows the commitment to ensure patients can access GP surgeries seven days a week, between 8am and 8pm.

"For years it's been too hard to access the NHS out of hours. But illness doesn't respect working hours. Heart attacks, major accidents, babies - these things don't just come from nine to five," Mr Cameron said.

"And the truth is that you are actually more likely to die if you turn up at the hospital at the weekend. Some of the resources are not up and running. The key decision-makers aren't always there.

"With a future Conservative government, we would have a truly seven day NHS."

However, the proposals have been met with scepticism by the British Medical Association (BMA).

"The £2bn extra funding that has been pledged falls far short of what is needed to deliver existing services, let alone fund additional care," said BMA council chair Dr Mark Porter.

"The NHS is recovering from one of the worst winter crises on record, during which some hospitals were forced to close their doors because they couldn't cope.

"With existing services stretched to breaking point… the NHS needs far more than just words to deliver extra care.

"Without a detailed, fully-costed plan, this is at best an empty pledge and at worst shameless political game playing with the NHS ahead of the election."
